What was the biggest reason the Bolsheviks came to power, Lenin or Tsar Nicholas?

Lenin was an important reason why the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia. This is because he helped guide and lead the Bolsheviks to power. He did this by organising the date of the revolution. If he had not done this the revolution may have been much later or maybe not happened at all. Lenin also acted as the face of the Bolsheviks. This attracted the much needed support for a revolution and a stable government. Another way he helped the Bolsheviks come to power was by introducing the April Theses. The April Theses of ‘Bread.Peace and Land.’ Were the basis of the party ideology. Without it the party would have no main agenda which could have meant a disorganised party with many voices. The April Theses also gave the Bolsheviks support of the people as these three ideologies were very popular to all types of people, which helped the Bolsheviks get the support they needed to come to power. Lenin was also seen as a leader for Russia after years of weak government e.g. the Tsar and the Provisional Government.

Tsar Nicholas II was an important reason why the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia. This is because of his poor decisions as a leader. For example, the Tsar made the fatal error of not stopping the war with Germany. The war cost the state lots of money, which angered the people due to high taxes, and the massive loss of Russian lives. This error eventually became one of the biggest issues in Russia, and eventually became part of the Bolshevik slogan of ‘Bread.Peace.Land’, which was a key reason why the Bolsheviks came to power. Because the soldiers got tired of this, some revolted against the Tsar under the Kornilov’s revolt. The Tsar then armed the red army, Bolshevik army, with guns to protect the city. After the failed revolt was over, the Bolsheviks now had access to weaponry which was useful in the revolution. The Tsar’s policies also meant that city workers were quite often neglected. This made them very angry, and was a major reason why the Bolsheviks won, as most of their support came from workers. After the collapse of the Tsar, the Provisional government came to power, which was very weak and unstable. This meant the Bolsheviks could easily take power.

In Conclusion the Tsar was the biggest reason the Bolsheviks came to power. This is because if the Tsar was a good leader, the Bolshevik party would have not probably formed. But because of his bad policies, and that he led to the Provisional government the Bolsheviks could easily come to power. Lenin was also important as he was the party leader and came up with the April Theses, but without the Tsar bad policies, he probably wouldn’t have been needed.
