How did Stalin strengthen his rule of the Soviet Union
Which of the following was the more important reason why
Stalin was able to strengthen his rule over Russia?
·
The Great Terror
·
Economic Policies e.g. 5 year plans and
Collectivisation
The Great Terror was an important reason why Stalin was able
to strengthen his rule over Russia. This is because it allowed Stalin to get
rid of any political opponents, e.g. Nikolai Bukharin. This allowed Stalin to
firmly rule over Russia without any opposition. Another reason how it allowed
Stalin to strengthen his rule using the Great Terror, was it kept the ordinary
people ‘in line’. This is because the ordinary people were to afraid to do the
wrong thing by opposing Stalin. This allowed Stalin to introduce changes
without having opposition from the people. However the Great Purges caused many
people to be angry about it, as it cost many lives.
The Economic Policies were an important reason why Stalin
was able to strengthen his rule over the Soviet Union. This is because the
economic policies such as the 5 year plans brought prosperity to Russia,
leading to increase popularity of Stalin. The 5 year plan also gave the feeling
to the people that they are all working towards Stalin’s vision of the Soviet
Union. This meant that people accepted Stalin as to be the best leader for
Russia. However the failure of one of the economic policies, Collectivisation,
caused many peasants, particularly from Ukraine to be upset of Stalin.
Collectivisation could have sown the seeds for a future revolution.
In Conclusion, the economic policies were the most important
reason why Stalin was able to strengthen his rule over the Soviet Union. This
is because the Great Terror, even though getting rid of his political
opponents, spread terror and anger through the population. This could have been
the start of a revolution similar to the 1917 revolutions. The economic
policies were more important because it gave most people the feeling that
Stalin was a good ruler.
